New Build – 6 Flats
Location: Kensington
Traditionally, converting barns has proven tricky – not always due to the conversion process itself but often as a result of planning restrictions. Thankfully, these days, planning departments look much more favourably on transforming barns for repurposing.
This is encouraging for many different reasons – not least because there are many barns that can now easily be overhauled and put to fresh use. Furthermore, our own team is trained in how to undertake barn conversions in London and the Home Counties.
If, in any of these areas, you own a barn and would like to see it converted into a new home, office, holiday let or, indeed, something else, we can go a significant way towards helping you see this dream in reality.
A big part of the appeal of repurposing an existing barn, rather than building a whole new structure in its place, is this barn can be truly unique in its character and features. Hence, these can be preserved in the barn’s new transition.
Our team here at Surrey Construction is thoroughly experienced in refurbishing and fitting out existing barns, all the while remaining sensitive to the historical features that may have drawn you towards revitalising that barn in the first place.
It all starts when you contact us to book a free site survey. We can then visit your barn, inspect and measure it and report back to you about the conversion possibilities this barn practically affords.
It bears emphasis that barns were originally built for agricultural purposes, such as for farm animals or the harvest, rather than as residences for humans. Therefore, a lot of heavy lifting is required for us to make these spaces habitable for our clients.
However, our trained team is more than up to the challenge. For example, we can install insulation where it has long been lacking and replace small windows with new ones less intentionally draught-inducing.
We can be at your side at every stage of the project development process – from the initial drawing-up of the plans right through to us signing off on the completed conversion. Our work with you will culminate in the creation of a beautifully-converted space.
While it can be undoubtedly – and notoriously – complicated to obtain legal permission for a barn conversion, the process was somewhat simplified in 2020 when the government amended Class Q of the Town and Country (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015.
If you have a barn that is put to agricultural use and meets a number of criteria specified in Class Q, you are permitted to convert that barn to residential use. This is allowed under what’s known as “permitted development” (PD) rights.
However, even if your barn does tick all of these boxes, the local planning authority (LPA) must still be consulted on whether you will need consent in relation to such factors as risks of contamination and flooding, impacts to transport, highways and noise.
It’s easy to book a free, 30-minute consultation where you can discuss your requirements with our experts.
